Sentinus Workshop on Floating and Sinking
We were very lucky to have Roy McClelland from Sentinus in School this week, helping us to investigate floating and sinking as this is something we have been learning about in our Titanic theme.
We were practicing our science skills of prediction and observation as we explored why an orange with a peel on, floats in water whilst one without sinks.
We also enjoyed watching raisins “dance” in soda. When we dropped them into the liquid, they sank at first. Then the carbon dioxide bubbles carried them to the top. When the bubbles popped, they sank again and the process repeated.
We discussed how ships can carry large cargo and talked about what made the Titanic split in half. We worked in groups to make our own boats with Knex, then testing them with a heavy load when tipped up on one side.
And that’s not all! We learned about coding with Microbit and lots more!
Great investigating and great team work P6!
