St Mary's Primary & Nursery School, Bellaghy, Magherafelt

Welcome

On behalf of the children, staff and governors of St Mary’s Primary School and Nursery Unit, I am delighted to welcome you to our school website.

St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School was established in 1964 and is situated in the middle of the town of Bellaghy. County Derry. Our Nursery Unit was opened in 2002, expanding our provision for the children of Bellaghy.

We believe that all children are life time learners. We know that children learn best when they feel happy, secure and well cared for. Therefore our first priority is the provision of strong pastoral care in a nurturing environment of catholic faith. We aim to develop in our children a passion and love of learning by providing an enriched, broad and balanced curriculum; that delivers a high quality, inclusive education for all, so that each may reach their full potential.

I sincerely hope that you will find our website to be an extremely useful resource, helping you to engage with your child’s educational journey through St Mary’s. Should you require any further information on admissions or would like to visit the school at any stage, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Mrs Mary McCann

Principal

Looking back on our year in nursery.
Summer Fun in nursery We had a wonderful last week in nursery. The sunshine brought ice pops, a visit from the ice cream van and a teddy bears picnic. The perfect end to our fun filled year.
Fun end to P6! With a visit to the park, sweet treats in the afternoon, teatime for the Transfer Group, and yummy ice cream on one of the hottest days, P6 enjoyed time to unwind with their classmates before their summer break.
Mummified Apples! ‘What’s the best way to mummify an apple?’ P6 investigated different ways to preserve an apple and were surprised by the results - mouldier than they predicted. The Ancient Egyptians were the experts in mummification. P6 learned many things about their lives eg the importance for The Nile River, and what we have in common with them too, in the last WAU topic this year.
Today St Mary's All County Champions visited the school to show their trophy and celebrate with the entire school community. There was much cheers and excitement as the boys arrived. They spoke to the classes about teamwork and the importance of not giving up. We are incredibly proud of the boys. They are wonderful role-models and demonstrate great teamwork and perseverance. They presented the Athlete of the Year trophies to P1-6. The boys received a £50 voucher for Bens Ice-cream from the Governors of St Mary's. That's a lot of ice-cream! We look forward to hearing about their achievements in the future! Well done boys!
St Mary’s were Truly Spoiled Today! The staff of St Mary's were treated to very special surprises today! A huge thank you to Johnny from Homeplace Cafe, who kindly gifted a wonderful selection of coffees, delicious freshly baked scones with jam and cream, and indulgent chocolate-covered strawberries. There was certainly a flurry of excitement around the staffroom table as everyone enjoyed these thoughtful treats. The Governors also treated staff and pupils to a visit from Patsy Mullan with ice-cream for everyone! It was greatly appreciated by all the staff and pupils on such a hot day.
Summer Fun in Primary 1!! Making the most of the sunny weather, we started the day following ‘bear clues’ to lead us out to a surprise picnic. Following this, we had a lovely ice cream treat from the ice cream van. Just what we needed on such a warm day!!
Thank you Mrs Convery Yesterday we said farewell and good luck to Mrs Convery as she goes off to have her baby. Thank you for everything you have done for St. Mary’s this year!
St. Mary’s PS Sports Day 2026 Our recent Sports Day was a fantastic celebration of energy, teamwork and school spirit. The children took part in a variety of different events, showcasing their determination, enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout the day. There were smiles, cheers and plenty of encouragement from classmates, parents and staff. A huge well done to all our pupils for making the day such a success. Special thank you to Mrs Carey for organising such a successful and enjoyable day!
