As part of our WAU topic ‘On Our Doorstep’ we visited the Turf Man statue just outside Bellaghy Bawn. In class we read and discussed the meaning of Seamus Heaney’s poem ‘Digging’ and how the statue relates to that poem. We sat in the sunshine with our clipboards and drew a sketch of the statue trying to add in as much of the detail as we could. Mrs McWilliams shared a special memory book she has of the day the Turf Man statue was unveiled to mark Seamus Heaney’s 70th birthday in 2009.
