Eco-Schools Green Flag Award
Eco-Schools Green Flag Award

St. Mary’s Primary School has been awarded a prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag by the environmental charity TIDY Northern Ireland.   The internationally recognised Green Flag is this highest award given to Eco-Schools and symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity.

In our school pupils are encouraged to bring in reusable water bottles, lunch boxes and avoid the use of plastic bags.  School waste is composted and pupils are encouraged to turn off electrical appliances while not in the classroom.  Each year pupils participate in the Walk to School Programme where pupils are encouraged to leave their cars behind and walk to school, this has resulted in reduced congestion around the school.
In addition, we promote annual litter picks so pupils take responsibility for their school grounds.  Each class has representatives on our Eco Council, one boy and one girl from primary 1 to primary 7.
This year the Eco Council received £1222 in funding and a Willow Tree Hut was purchased to create an outdoor classroom.
Many thanks to the Mc Alynn family who kindly brought in compost for the school and also to Magherafelt Council who lent the school litter pickers, gloves and bin bags for our Big Spring Clean. Thanks also to Mr Nugent for his installation of the flagpole.
